One of our local Watch Duty professionals is Liam Winstead who is based in San Diego. To do his job, he relies in part on ham radio reports as you’ll learn from this short video produced by KPBS. Pay particular attention to the second word on the video. It’s “QST.” Sounds like something that may have come across the Fallbrook Amateur Radio Club repeater system. There is also a Morse code identifier at the one minute mark in the video although the characters were not immediately decipherable. The important point is for us hams to convey brief, accurate and authoritative information when the chips are down. We already do that for the most part and our field reports and the relaying of information heard on official radio channels (e.g. Pendleton Fire) are undoubtedly helpful. Here, then, is the KPBS video. It’s a gem:

President Ron Patten, KG6HSQ, called the meeting to order at 1503 hrs.

The pledge of allegiance was conducted by Ron, KG6HSQ.

Ron, KG6HSQ, recapped the North County Fire Open House that was this morning from 0900 – 1300 hrs. He showed a number of pictures from the event.

Ron, KG6HSQ, announced that the Fallbrook Harvest Faire is coming up soon on October 19th. Muster is at 0600 hours. A sign-up sheet was available at the meeting.

Brent, KJ6UMY, gave a revised version of his presentation on “Low Cost Choke Balun”.

Ron, KG6HSQ, introduced the topic of FARC name badges and solicited the groups’ opinion on the topic.

Ron, KG6HSQ, talked about the Slow Scan TV (SSTV) images being transmitted by the International Space Station (ISS). He presented some of the images transmitted.

Ron, KG6HSQ, discussed the Watch Duty app and an hour long video that is available online discussing the organization organization (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXgXXK4D69c). He played a shorter video with Liam Winstead, a local volunteer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAUaurgGzP8).

Bob, W6VR, commented on impedance and impedance matching as it related to KJ6UMY’s presentation.

Jon, K6QVA and former FARC president, joined us via Zoom and offered his greetings to the group.

Ron, KG6HSQ, updated us the status of the Scout Hut. NCF has applied for a FPUD grant to renovate the building. There should be an answer to the application in a December time frame.
