GPS Does Need a Backup, Terrestrial Is the Answer – But Which Terrestrial?

Loran and BPS (Broadcast Positioning System) are two high profile alternatives to GPS:

The following was copied and pasted from Cal Fire/San Diego’s Website this morning. Thanks to KUSI-TV for the news tip:

CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Investigators arrested Allen Dinoyo. Dinoyo was arrested for igniting approximately nine separate vegetation fires. The first fire occurred on November 10, 2024, within the community of Jamul, California. The next six fires occurred on Wednesday, November 20 and all within a span of less than two hours. The fires on November 20, 2024, were located within the communities of Rancho San Diego, Jamul and Dehesa, California, within the County of San Diego. The subsequent two fires occurred on November 30, 2024, within the cities of San Diego and La Mesa. Vigilant witnesses provided CAL FIRE investigators critical information which assisted in identifying Dinoyo as a suspect. Along with witness statements and subsequent investigative efforts CAL FIRE Law Enforcement, in cooperation with partners at San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, were able to determine Dinoyo’s location. Throughout the entire investigation, public safety remained the top priority for all Law Enforcement involved. Dinoyo, a transient resident of San Diego County, was arrested on Saturday, November 30, 2024, on multiple felony arson charges. The investigation report will be referred to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. CAL FIRE wants to remind the public that arson investigations are complex and require thorough evidence collection, scene examination, and witness interviews, which can be time-consuming. Accurate findings are essential for accountability and preventive measures. We appreciate the public’s support and patience throughout this comprehensive investigation. Additionally, CAL FIRE extends gratitude to our partners at the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Police Department, San Diego County Probation Department, and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for their valuable support and assistance during the investigation.
