The FARC Upgrade Incentive Program
Occasionally FARC will receive ham equipment donations that the club can use, donate, loan or sell. Ron and I are setting up a program that will encourage the ham, especially the new ham to upgrade his/her license and start exploring more of the ham radio hobby other than just VHF/UHF spectrum. We know that one of the obstacles is the cost of HF radios and other equipment, either new or used. For a new ham, equipment may not be a priority, but just a want.
On occasion, the club gets in donations of HF radios and other equipment. After they radios are tested, we would make them available to new hams on a loan basis. This would provide an incentive for them to upgrade and start exploring the wonderful world of HF.
Along with the incentive program, I am reaching out to seasoned ham club members to become mentors (Elmers) to new hams. You don’t have to be a seasoned ham to be an Elmer. If you have experience in ham radio, share your experience and work with him/her. Antennas do not have to be expensive to get on the air. A simple homemade wire dipole can do it. Elmers are key for the new ham to explore and learn in this wonderful hobby.
In addition, I will be making a list of equipment that has been donated to the club that will be available for sale. It will be an ongoing list, updated as needed. This list will be sent out to FARC members.
I am looking forward to getting this program started and hopefully some of our new hams will want to join in the fun.

Club Emergency Service Sticker
Since being a emergency communicator is more than just a sticker on a window, we will begin by giving a sticker to club members that complete IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100.

Fallbrook Amateur Radio Club
March 4, 2023
President Ron Patten, KG6HSQ, called the meeting to order at 1502 hrs.
The pledge of allegiance was conducted by Ron, KG6HSQ.
Ron, KG6HSQ, had the attendees introduce themselves for the benefit of new members. He
announced the availability of new club/ARES decals. Decals are available to new members at no
cost for completing the FEMA ICS 100 course. This can be done online by following the link in
the March newsletter. Upon completion, submit your certificate via email to Brent,
[email protected] to receive your decal.
Stephen, KC6MIE, presented the clubs new Upgrade Incentive Policy. Technician licensees who
upgrade to General are eligible to receive HF equipment donated to the club at no cost, subject to
the equipment available.
Ron, KG6HSQ, reported that 372 of the 450 available booths have been taken for the Avocado
Festival coming up on April 23, 2023. Volunteers muster around 0500 to assist in getting
participants to their booths and answering questions. Volunteers are finished at 0900. As usual,
FARC will have a booth in the parking lot of Wells Fargo Bank from 0900 to 1700 hours.
Members are welcome to staff the booth for all or part of the day or to just drop by.

Ron, KG6HSQ, gave a tour of the FARC website, highlighting new additions and its various
features and links. He gave special attention to the Alert California camera systems and its new
features.
Lee, KM6UFF, has been working on a project to allow ham equipment operation from the 12v
battery in his electric car. If loads with large inrush currents such an inverter are connected, it
can shutdown the system that charges the car’s 12v battery from the high voltage traction battery.
To prevent this he displayed and explained a soft-start circuit he has constructed to prevent that.
Stephen, KC6MIE, described the QRP Labs QDX transceiver for FT8 and similar modes he has
ordered.
