Canada’s CHU Shortwave Time Station to Be Silenced

Canada is soon to be without CHU, that nation’s official time and frequency station. The time and frequency information are derived from atomic clocks. In the United States, radio station WWV (and its companions) provide the same service and are still going strong — but for how much longer is anyone’s guess. WWV was on the chopping block some time ago, was saved by additional funding, and may yet be considered an unnecessary expense someday. Here is the story of CHU’s upcoming demise:

Ron, KG6HSQ, reported on the wrap-up Avocado Festival meeting. No major crime events. Our SDSO Lieutenant plans to be at the Fallbrook Substation for a while.

Ron, KG6HSQ, announced Amateur Radio Field Day coming up at the end of the month on June 27th and 28th at Fraiser Elementary School. Information is on the FARC website. Press announcement has been sent to the Village News. Pre-setup at 1700 hrs Friday and setup starting Saturday at 0700.

Ron, KG6HSQ, gave email system change updates. Our provider has stopped supporting out email list. We will be testing other systems this month including groups.io. Existing system will work until the end of June.

Ron, KG6HSQ, reviewed our latest Activity Day on May 30th and presented pictures from the FARC Facebook page showing participation. Pictures included N49CU, a civilian version of the CH-47, now stationed at the Fallbrook Airpark.

Ron, KG6HSQ, reported his and KJ6UMY’s sit-along with the San Diego Sheriff’s Office dispatchers. One group of dispatchers handles incoming phone calls (and text) and a different group handles radio dispatch. The same personnel alternate between these functions. Some cell phones support 911 calling on alternate carriers. When dispatchers get a hang-up call, they call back on landlines but not cell calls due to the many “butt dials” they get.

President Ron Patten, KG6HSQ, adjourned that meeting at 1557 hrs.
