Technician Class
Becoming a licensed radio operator to help with emergency communications, is one of the many Ham Radio activities.
The
Fallbrook Amateur Radio Club, will be offering license preparation classes
for the "Amateur Radio Technician Class License" this is the entry level
license for amateur radio operation that will give you privileges on amateur
radio bands useful for local communication.
This
document is an overview of the Technician Class License preparatory class
that is being offered by the Fallbrook Amateur Radio Club.
Please note that there is a final North County CERT member sign-up date of April 3, 2009. After
that date available seats for the class will be opened up to the public.
Because of the room size the class will be limited to a maximum of 25. There
are currently 20 names on the roster.
We look forward to having you join us for the course and progressing
into a new and exciting adventure into the world of amateur radio.
Technician Class Information and Requirements
Meetings will be held at the Roy Noon Meeting Hall, 231 Hawthorne Street, Fallbrook, CA
Meeting Time: 6:30PM, Every Tuesday Evening for 7 straight weeks, plus one review week and a final exam week
First Class Session: April 14, 2009 Final Session (Exam) June 9, 2009
Attendance at every session is very important. Due to time constraints
we will be unable to “backtrack” to cover missed material.
A radio is NOT required for any part of the class
Deposit described below is due no later than April 3, 2009. Without
a deposit you will not be enrolled in the class. Make checks payable
to Fallbrook Amateur Radio Club, 1211 Via de Maranatha, Fallbrook, CA
92028-3634.
The Class will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants. If there
are spaces left after the initial grouping that we currently have (you are
receiving this notice) members of the public will be invited to participate.
CERT members will be given preferential entry.
There will be 10 Units covered in 7 class sessions. There will be no
spare time. Technically the course should be 12 weeks in duration.
It will be busy. The course is based on the Technician Class License
VEC question pool that contains 392 questions. Beginning the second
week there will be a “mini” exam of 4 to 5 questions from the prior weeks
class given to everyone. These are simply sample test and have no bearing
on pass or fail in the course. In between classes, study will be necessary.
It is very unlikely that you can simply attend all the classes and pass the
exam without interim study time at home.
Session 8 (June 2nd) will consist of questions and answers from class participants
and a sample test modeled after the actual exam. The actual examination,
and the practice exam, will consist of 35 multiple choice (4 choices) questions
all of which are derived from the question pool cited above. To successfully
pass the examination you must have a minimum of 26 questions right.
Session 9 (June 9th) will be spent taking the examination for issuance of
a license. This session will be open to the public and examinations
for all classes of licenses will be conducted.
The class is sponsored by the Fallbrook Amateur Radio club and is free.
Instructors and Volunteer Examiners volunteer their time to teach these classes.
Certified Volunteer Examiners will administer the final tests for license
and they also volunteer their time.
There will be a $10.00 deposit for the class which will be fully refundable
at the end of the first class session if you choose to not continue.
If you continue the course and miss classes, you will be required to take
the mini-exam from the week/s you were absent and pass it/them to continue,
otherwise the deposit will be forfeited. If you continue until the
completion of the course without any absences, or failed mini-exams due to
absences, and take the final exam the deposit will be refunded. We
apologize for the Deposit Issue but we’ve been left high and dry in the past
several sessions with dropouts and missed classes to the point classes have
not been worth Instructors volunteering their time. Example: at one
past class we had 30+ sign up for the class. Supplies and materials
were ordered for that class number. 8 people showed up for the class.
It will be necessary for you to have a study guide that contains the question
pool. We will have those available and the Cost is $20.00. It
is suggested that if there are multiple users in the same household that
no more than two people should use the same book because of time restraints.
We need to emphasize that between class study time is essential.
There is a $15.00 Examination fee that is established by the American Radio
Relay League VEC. That fee is collected at the time of the final examination
and is collected whether the exam is passed or failed. This is a nationally
established fee and is not set by the Fallbrook Amateur Radio Club.
There is no fee for the issuance of an Amateur Radio License by the Federal
Communications Commission. A license is normally issued within a week
of the exam. The VE Examiner Coordinator is normally notified when
the licenses are issued and the VE Examiner will promptly notify you of the
issuance and your call sign. Once the call sign is issued you can immediately
go “on the air” and a hard copy of your license will be delivered by mail
within about two weeks..
This will give you somewhat of an overview of our anticipated course.
We are looking forward to having you in the class and hopefully the class
and a new license will open up a whole new world for you.
